Merman of The Month -February 2014

Mer-Prince JV’s Merman dream has been with him since birth. 6 years before his birth, humans met their first big screen, live-action movie mermaid who had fallen in love with a regular human man (Madison Bauer from Splash, 1984). Mere months before his birth, the world met a spunky red-headed mermaid who fell in love with a human prince (Ariel from The Little Mermaid, 1989). He saw both of these movies at an early age, and was inspired. JV has always been a dreamer. His true merman journey began when he was 17, when he purchased his first tail, a golden stretch vinyl tail from Mermaidfx.net (now defunct). Since then, he has been a part of the Mer-community. In summer of 2012, JV got his first latex tail, from Fish Butts. He has had 3 tails since that first one, and changed tailmakers to Mermaid Citrine from Mermaids of Hawaii. His design, called “Tilly’s Heart” is based on Tilikum, the largest Orca in captivity. He chose to have the design resemble an Orca, a design that had not been used yet in the community. Soon after that, he joined the Royal MerFamily, as Prince of the Orcas. In 2014, he created MerRoyalty, an entertainment company based on delivering professional, enjoyably diverting, educational and engaging services for any type of function. His goal is to bring a little magic back to the world, and to lead by example. As a human, JV Hampton-VanSant graduated from Lesley University in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Holistic Psychology, and a minor in Expressive Arts Therapy. He has interned at afterschool facilities, such as Arlington Enrichment Collaborative in Arlington, Massachusetts and Community Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a trained Diversity Leadership facilitator, and currently works with Multicultural BRIDGE training youth (ages 5 to 21) around Berkshire County on being leaders in their schools and the greater community. His future goals as a human is to become a guidance counsellor and/or school psychologist. In 2014, he will be participating in the Berkshire Leadership Program. In his spare time, JV loves to sew and craft, specializing in apparel and jewelry respectively.
